Adriatic Treasures: Croatia to Venice

Mike and Judy Henderson
September 13-29, 2019

I'm going to leave the map at the start of each page so you can see where we are.

9/19/2019 (Thursday) We are going to visit the museum of Ivan Meštrović, a famous Croatian sculptor.

Our guide for the day joined us.

Here's the museum building.

Two statues in the entrance garden.

Some of his work that was inside the museum.  I can only show a small sample here.

Rose, his first wife.

Job in agony.

Adam and Eve.

Then we headed to the ruins of Diocletian's Palace.  Here's a representation of what it must have looked like.

The entrance, today, is just an opening between two buildings.

Some of the lower area of the Palace.  For centuries this area was used as a dump.

Another room under the palace.

Then we went up to the main entrance to the palace.  It's part of the old town now.

Another view of that square.

We walked to one of the gates of the palace.

And then walked through the narrow streets of the old town.  There are many high end shops in the old town.

Just before we left the old town, we came upon this statue of Marko Marulić, the Croatian national poet.

Then we walked to the port area to board the ferry to Brač Island.

Here's a view into the main bay of the ferry, where the cars and our bus will go.  We ride in the upper decks.

Here's the interior passenger deck.

And the top deck, which is open.  Most of us went up to this deck because the weather was nice.

Diane and Judy on the top deck.

We boarded the bus before we reached Brač Island.

Wendy on the bus before we drove off.

We drove to the Jakšić Gallery and met one of the artists, the daughter.

Here she is explaining how they produce their sculptures.

Here's a sculpture done by her mother, I believe.

Then we went to the Žiza Restaurant on the island.  But before we went into the restaurant we played Bocce Ball.

Here's Judy throwing a ball.

As we entered the restaurant they had a sweet treat for each of us.

Diane sampling the treat.

We had lunch on the terrace, overlooking a lake in the distance.

Lunch was served buffet style and was quite good.  They served dessert later, but I was too busy serving myself to get a picture of that:-)

Some of our group at lunch.

As we were leaving Mama Žiza came out to pose with us.  It was a really enjoyable lunch.  I hope Tauck continues to use Žiza for future tours.

Another bus ride took us back to the ferry to return to the mainland.  However, the ferry was full and our bus could not fit on this trip.  So we walked on board and Tauck arranged for a different bus to meet us at the dock to take us back to the hotel.

The trip took about an hour.  Here are Kris and C.H. on the ferry.

Dinner was on our own this evening, but since Judy and I were still full from lunch we skipped dinner.

Our adventure continues here.
